Silences, proxemics and contact

During the first page we used different lengths of silences during dialogue to see how it effects the atmosphere. During my first three lines where I find the light isn't working, ask the actress what's wrong and what on earth she's doing the difference of time between each line effects the atmosphere and tension between the characters. The contact moment is when the playwright and the actress first kiss and the contact between us apart from the kiss I.e hands and arms. It takes away the attention from the actual kiss as Lucas and I don't properly kiss. The proxemics are important to show the tension between the characters as they start off far apart and then as the scene goes on the get closer physically and emotionally. The silence also shows the sexual tension between the two of them.

Characterisation

Today we worked on determining how our characters feels about the situation. My character, the playwright would be cocky and arrogant because his plays have been published and successful. He will also feel as if he has power over the actress because he employs her. The actress will feel like she is inferior to the playwright because he is employing her

Rehearsal process

Character research

As my character is the playwright I have done some research into playwrights from different time periods. For example in this picture we have Aristotle and Aristophanes from Greek theatre and then Henrik Ibsen from the 19th century and then a more contemporary playwright with Andrew Lloyd Webber. By looking at how these playwrights lived will help me to develop my character.

In this bottom picture we have William Shakespeare, so may say the worlds most famous playwright as well as Willy Russell and John Godber. Although they are all successful writers they will have lived very different lives. I can take aspects from each of these to develop my own character

Rehearsal progress

During recent rehearsals Lucas and I have been successful in blocking the first few pages. We used techniques such as given circumstances to understand what was actually happening in the scene. When magic if to find out how we ourselves would react in that situation, this helps us to develop our characters.

Naturalism and its origins

Naturalism was developed in the late 19th century and early 20th century in Europe. It attempts to crest the perfect picture of what life is actually like in reality. This is in stark contrast to realism.

Hello! My name is Liam and I am studying level 3 performing arts. One of the subjects we have is acting styles and we have naturalism as the assignment. The play we have been given is The Blue Room written by David Hare and I have been given the character of the Playwright.
